In 2020, I Will...

I did a pretty good job of my 2019 goals, but I ended the year feeling pretty overwhelmed. I'm setting some loose & ambiguous but extremely important goals for the new year. Here's what's on deck.

Look for & hopefully buy a house
Slowly but surely, Mike & I have begun the house hunt, & though I, for one, would be happy to stay in our Tremont apartment for  half a decade more, I'm still enthusiastic about the prospect of finding a forever home. We're focusing on a few areas on the west side (best side!) of Cleveland, & we're looking at a bunch of different options, timing-wise, so we could end the year in our apartment or be out by early spring. We'll see!

Recapping My 2019 Goals: Here's How I Did

I'm not great at new year's resolutions or goals or intentions or whatever it is that you want to call them. Usually, I forget what I've committed to... yet, I make new ones every year. Here's what I committed to at the beginning of 2019 - & how I did.

1. Go back to therapy.
A year ago, this was my top priority of 2019 - which makes sense because a year ago, I was struggling with depression again. It seemed to abate on its own in early 2019, & then I put therapy back on the back burner. Honestly, I don't feel like I need a therapist at this point - but it's always better to have one before you need one, so maybe I should add this back onto the list for 2020!

What I'm Most Proud Of This Year

What are your biggest accomplishments of the year? As I've seen friends' responses pop up all over social media, I've been trying to think of my own, flipping back through my mental Rolodex of 2019. Here's what I've come up with - & I'd love to hear your answers, too!

1. Rode my 100th spinning class
This milestone was originally set to happen in January, but right after the first of the year, I took a nasty fall on black ice & destroyed my right knee. That pushed this goal back a few months... which made it that much sweeter when, in mid-March, I hit 100 rides at Harness Cycle! Four friends came out to ride with me, & the instructor made a playlist of all my faves.

Let’s Get Physical, Physical: My Health Goals for the Remainder of 2019

Who says the start of the new year is the only time to set lofty, meaningful health and fitness goals? Not I. As 2019 begins to wind down (insert “time flies when you’re getting old” sentiment here), I’ve been thinking about a few of the health goals I’ve been pursuing this year – and what I want to work on in the next few months.

1. Wear my mouthguard every night, no exceptions.

I grind my teeth at night, & it’s negatively impacting my tooth enamel, which can become a huge problem if left untreated. For years, I’ve been wearing crappy CVS-brand mouthguards – the kind you have to boil in a pot of water & fit to your mouth yourself – but they get gunky & gummy real fast. Gross.

I'm Not Happy Unless I'm Doing These 3 Things Every Single Week

Remember how I didn't read any books in August? And how I haven't written, like, any blog posts this summer? Well, those two deficits are related - related, that is, to a larger theme of my very busy summer & the lessons I'm learning from it.

There are three things I did none or almost-none of in August:

What's your biggest "I don't often say it aloud, but eventually I'd like to..." aspiration?

I asked this on Twitter this week & didn't get much in the way of responses - but I realized after writing it, that I wanted to expand on some of my own answers. Here are the three things at the top of my someday-I'm-gonna list - & as age 35 approaches (in just over a week, yikes!), I'm thinking of when & how to hit all of them while I'm still (relatively) young.

Time flies, right?

So here's what I want to do - if not soonish, then eventually, whenever eventually is.

In 2019, I Will...

I've got to be honest: 2018 is the first year in a long time that has ended with me feeling less than great - & I've been feeling way less than great lately. I don't totally know why because, in reality, 2018 was a pretty darn good one - but right now, I'm looking forward as much as I'm looking back, trying to figure out how I can start feeling better in 2019.

That's what these resolutions goals are focused on: looking forward & feeling better. Here's what I've got on deck in the new year - to start.

Go back to therapy.

This is my number-one goal for 2019. I stopped therapy in mid-2015, & I haven't felt like I've needed it since then - until now. I didn't look for a therapist in December as planned, but it's the first thing I need to get on top of in the new year.

In 2019, I'm pursuing mental health... again. It feels disappointing & borderline embarrassing to relapse like this after a few years of doing so well & feeling so healthy, but I guess that's how it goes, right? Just gotta take it as it comes - & take care of myself.

Complete 100 Harness Cycle classes... & keep going

At the time of this writing, I've got 20 classes to go, so if I stay on track, I should hit 100 Harness classes by early to mid-February - but I have no plans to stop once I get there. Anyone want to come celebrate my 100th ride with me?

In 2019, here's to many more rides - including the ones designated only for Club 100 members!

Try (at least) 10 new kinds of workouts

Of all my goals, this feels among the most daunting. Since starting to work out today, as I've written before, I haven't lost a single pound - & have, in fact, gained quite a few. I know, I know, "You can't out-exercise a bad diet" (we'll get to that in a sec), but I'd also like to diversify my exercise in an effort to try to be healthier.

In 2019, I'd like to try some other workouts. I certainly don't plan to abandon Harness, but I'd like to put my newfound workout confidence to use & try a few new places.

Focus on healthy eating

I eat like crap. I know it. I try to tell myself that I don't - & I have, to some extent, gotten better about it - but overall, man, I eat poorly. And it's time for that to change.

In 2019, I'd like to... eat better, period. I barely know where to begin, but I swear to God, this will be the year I not only begin but continue.

Take a solo vacation of some sort

I've been daydreaming of a week-long vacation/staycation to some sort of cabin or yurt or treehouse or something else outdoorsy & barely wifi accessible. I've never done this before, but maybe this is the year for it?

In 2019, I'll explore a few options & book one & not feel bad about taking a frivolous, just-for-me week of work to not even go anywhere amazing. Know what's amazing? Mental health.

Save at least $5k

This goal is so elusive to me. This year, I paid off my credit card bill, but truth be told, I still didn't quite figure out how to live within my means, as evidenced by the fact that I wasn't able to save as much as I wanted or intended to. That's gonna hit me hard come tax season (uh, like, a week from now).

In 2019, I'm committing to not withdrawing from my savings account, like, ever, unless it's for something huge & unexpected, like a health bill or car issues. No drawing from my savings to supplement my daily living... or spending.

Read 80+ books again

This year, my goal was actually only 75 books, & I blew through it to hit 100. I don't like to set the goal of 100, though, because reading isn't a race, & I don't want to turn down long books out of fear that they'll take me so long to read that they'll be a detriment to my ability to read more... or something.

In 2019, I'll aim for 80 books, which is pretty easy/average for me, & if I go beyond that, great. I'll never be upset to read more than planned - but I don't want to set myself up to leave behind great books in pursuit of a random numerical goal.

Participate in some sort of professional development

I feel like all my friends have masters degrees, & here I am, plugging away at the same job I've had for 6+ years (at the same place I've worked for 11+ years). It's time for me to do something that will make me feel good about my skills, empowered by my efforts to learn more, & equipped to do more, better, & with new knowledge.

In 2019, I'm looking for some kind of online class or course that will help me become a better digital marketing and/or overall communicator. Do you know of anything like this? Get at me!

Focus on friendships

I don't feel like I have a lot of close friends here in Cleveland. I love the folks I know, but I wouldn't say we're close, which means that when I want that debriefing-out-with-a-BFF feeling, I'm at a loss - unless I turn to FaceTime with long-distance friends.

In 2019, I'd like to put extra effort into being a good friend & cultivating closer friendships, whether with the people I already know or new people entirely. So, um, does anyone wanna be my friend?

What are you aiming for in the new year?

2018: The Year I Got My Sh!t Together?

As 2019 approaches, I'm reflecting on how surprisingly successful I was in 2018. I didn't think of it like that throughout most of the year - but now that I'm looking back on it, I feel kind of proud of how well I adulted.

In 2018, I...

Changed my name

In January, I took a day off work, dragged my mom to a judge's office downtown, & made it official: I'm legally Kate Bigam Kaput, y'all! As longtime readers know, my legal first name was Sara - & now it's not. Sure I still haven't changed all the paperwork (like, um, with my banks), & this will probably cause some end-of-year issues, but I'm on my way

In 2019: Time to make it official with my banks! Why do they make it so hard? No one has a fax machine anymore, you guys.

Went to a lot of doctors

This year, I finally took it upon myself to schedule visits to a pulmonologist, an allergist, & a neurologist. I did a CAT scan, had allergic tests, & participated in a 24-hour sleep study, with follow-up appointments to come. I also scheduled an upcoming physical, where I'll get my vaccines updated & ask to have my thyroid checked.

In 2019: In January, I'll find out the results of my sleep study & determine, with my neurologist, a course of action moving forward. I also neeeeed to schedule a well-woman visit & a dentist appointment. Any Clevelanders love their gynecologist and/or dentist? Get at me.

Paid off a huge medical bill

OK, fine, I have $200 left to go, but that'll be paid off in the next couple of weeks, so I'm counting it as paid, for the purposes of this post. It was such a pain to work my way through all this paperwork, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected, & I'm proud of myself for facing it instead of avoiding it, as I am wont to do.

In 2019: I'm sure I'll have a new medical bill to sort out following my recent sleep study (dreading this), but it's worth it to finally see doctors, get answers, & feel better, overall.

Paid off my credit card

WOOOO, I am not a person who uses my credit card anymore (except, fine, for the Michelle Obama tickets I just bought!!!, which is OK because I just wanted the points - & then quickly paid it off). I'm really proud of myself on this one, though if I'm being honest, it continues to be difficult for me to curb my spending.

In 2019: I will open no new credit cards & only use my existing credit card thoughtfully & sparingly (like if I want the points on a large purchase). Now, time to start increasing my savings so that 2019 can be the year I really get my finances in order.

Started working out

I know, I know, I've written about this a lot. In April, I went to my first Harness Cycle class... & cried my face off & felt terrible about it. And then I went to, like, 75 more classes, & now I'm on my way to 100, & I haven't lost a single pound, but I do love the ride. For the first time in my life, I can say, "Yes, I work out three or four times a week."

In 2019: I want to step it up & try a other kinds of workouts. I told my mom I'd go to kickboxing classes with her, & a few Instagram friends convinced me that I should give Orange Theory a try. And I still want to try aerial yoga at Yoga Strong!

Did lots of freelance work

Last September, I started freelancing for Cleveland Magazine following a simple request that I write two book reviews for them. That turned into steady work, a project or two a month - just small sidebars, mostly, but I also told my mental health story in a long, personal essay. I've loved the opportunity to learn more about & make more connections in the CLE - while seeing my name in print.

In 2019: I'd love to keep doing this, if Cleveland Magazine will have me, & I'd like to find a couple other outlets I can submit personal essays to on occasion. It's been awhile!

Got rid of a ton of stuff

After reading Cait Flanders' The Year of Less in February, I undertook a process to, well, have a lot less, & I got rid of bags & bags & bags of stuff. Like, how could I even have that much stuff in an apartment so small? I'm now a lot more thoughtful about what I buy & when & why - which is also partially how I paid off that credit card bill.

In 2019: I plan to continue my attempts at thoughtful minimalism, as outlined in a post I wrote right after I read Flanders's book.

Tell me: What was your best adulting win of 2018? What have you finally gotten the hang of?

6 Small Goals for May

Wednesday, May 2, 2018

OK, let's cut right to the chase: I didn't follow through on most of my May goals.
  1. Clean out my car. Didn't do this. Again. In my defense, it was still cold most of the month.
  2. Plan our honeymoon. Uhhh, we haven't really done this, which is very much not OK. Both Mike & I were overwhelmed by deadlines in the latter part of April, & we didn't do any planning. Now I'm in a full-scale panic & trying to get it all done by the end of this week... since we leave on the 22nd.
  3. Make it through Passover without eating leaven. Total fail. I broke Passover by eating pierogis on Dyngus Day. Womp.
  4. List the last of my stuff on Poshmark. Almost everything is listed, & some of it has even sold. My earnings helped pay for me to enjoy a weekend out on the town for a friend's bachelorette party last weekend.
  5. Schedule a well-woman visit. I didn't do this. Why didn't I do this? I have no idea. I'll schedule one for June, when I'm back from Costa Rica - which will take up half of May!
  6. Experiment with workout options. I wouldn't say I experimented, necessarily, but I did go to six cycling classes, which is, frankly, more working out than I've ever done in my life. I'm looking forward to sticking with it.
So yeahhhh, I didn't do a great job of my April goals. In fact, this was, goals-wise, my least successful month since I started doing these goals posts. But I did get all my work done, met a difficult freelancing deadline, cleaned the hell out of my apartment, & went to seven Harness Cycle classes, so I'm going to try not to be too hard on myself about these other little failures.

Here's what I'm working on in May:
  1. No food delivery. I've been doing a better-than-usual job, lately, of eating at home. My primary vice is ordering in when I'm both hungry & lazy (worse than hangry, IMO), & that happens to be the most expensive way to get food, so no more of that in May.
  2. Finish my first pack of Harness Cycle classes. I have four classes left to go on my 10-class pack, & I'd like to get them all in before I head to Costa Rica so that I can start fresh with a new pack of classes when I return.
  3. Keep up with Mint budgeting. I'm ramping this up slowly, but it's very interesting for me to figure out exactly where all my money goes. I've got to keep an eye on it - & hopefully use what I learn to change my habits.
  4. Complete E.R. before our honeymoon. This is a totally frivolous goal, but I've got two seasons left & feel like I simply cannot step away from this show for two weeks. I have to finish it before I go!
  5. Read more books than I did in April. I only read four books in April, which is way below my usual numbers - & I miss it. Time to get back to it in May.
  6. Chill the eff out in Costa Rica. I hope this one is easy, though I guess we have to plan the damn honeymoon first, huh?
What are your May goals? How'd you do in April?

I'm linking up with Feel Good Dress Better's monthly goals link-up.

6 Small Goals for February

Saturday, February 3, 2018

Another month, another list of goals, linking up with Writes Like a Girl. Let's jump right into it, shall we? Here's how I did on January's goals:
  1. Hang art on my walls. This is not done. I hate myself. (I did hang, like, four things, though, & we got a new bed all set up, so I don't totally hate myself.)
  2. Get a damn haircut. I made an appointment with Daniel Price of Le Beau in Tremont, who did my hair on my wedding day. He chopped off nearly a foot of hair & gave me a beautiful bright red color, so vibrant it's nearly purple. I love it (even if no one else in my life seems to) (not that I'm being super sensitive to this or anything).
  3. Eat at home more, eat out less. Mike did a ton of meal-planning this month, & I started eating breakfast & lunch at home, for the most part. I still ordered in a lot, but I only went out to eat a few times - & most importantly, I cooked a lot more than usual.
  4. Work on my sleep issues. I certainly haven't solved my sleep issues, but I have been working on them, which is a start. I've been sleeping pretty well lately (albeit still too much) & have been trying to go to bed by midnight.
  5. Schedule some sort of spa service. I have a massage appointment this coming week, which was the earliest I could get at The Beauty Room. I'm really looking forward to it - especially with 20% off!
  6. Read only books I already own. I'm marking this as accomplished, despite the fact that I did, actually buy two new books. Both cost >$5, & I bought them for good reasons: One is part of a series, & I already owned the next book in the series, so I had to buy one to get to the other; the second book I bought was published just this month... by my husband! Extenuating circumstances, guys. Beyond that, everything I read was something I already owned.
I think I did pretty well last month, wouldn't you say? I'm off to a decent start! Here's what's on the docket (I hope) for February.
  1. HANG ART ON MY WALLS. If I haven't finished this by the time February 28th rolls around, please, will someone just punch me in the face?
  2. Finish setting up our apartment. This is kind of related to hanging art, though not entirely. With our new bed up, we also need to rearrange furniture, hang curtains, buy a rug, take stuff to the basement, take down our Christmas tree (oops)... I want to get as much done as possible before the month is up.
  3. Push my social boundaries. I've made a lot of plans for February, which stresses me out a bit. When I look at my planner, I'm slightly overwhelmed to see plans every night some weeks - but I want to do my best to attend as much as I can & try to master my anxiety of social situations.
  4. Make a dentist appointment. If I know myself, I'd say this is the one on this list most likely to be marked unfinished by the end of the month (aside from hanging art on my walls, apparently). I haven't been to my dentist, for, um... awhile, which is especially embarrassing considering that my aunt is a hygienist & my father-in-law is a dentist.
  5. Set up at least one new friend date. I actually went on a friend date on February 1st (hi, Meganne!), & it was so much fun that it made me much less afraid of trying it again. I've been DMing with a couple of other Instagram folks about setting up some plans (hi, Amber & Maddy!), so I'd like to try to move forward with that.
  6. Don't buy any new clothes or accessories. I've gotten better about not spending money on stuff I don't need, but I haven't gotten that good at it. No new stuff in February! I'm not calling it a no-spend month, but I'm reaaaally gonna try not to indulge in unnecessary vanity items.
What are your goals for this month? How did you do on your January goals?

Fine, I'll Pick a Word for 2017

Saturday, January 7, 2017

Picking a word for the year is the new making resolutions for the year, huh? OK, I'll play.

In December, I joined the Stratejoy Holiday Council, a project/workbook/etc. to help you assess the closing year & prepare for the new ones. Part of the work for that project is about finding your word for the year & five related words to go with it. Though I liked the Holiday Council idea, I admittedly didn't finish it - in fact, I only made it about a third of the way through - but I liked the general gist, & so I just did my own version.

And so, like everyone else in the world seems to have done, I've decided on my 2017 word:

In 2017, I will be committed.

Here's what I'm focused on, in particular.

I will commit to my creativity.

For as much as I was published in early 2016, I stopped submitting my writing anywhere beyond my own blog once Heart's The Mix, a freelancers collective, was shut down over the summer. Pitching my writing feels so vulnerable, & it's so much work, & I just haven't done it - but in 2017, I want to push myself to do it at least a few times.

I will commit to better health.

I try for this every year, & I always fail. I don't move enough, I don't eat well enough, I weigh too much. This year, especially as I prepare for our wedding, I want to take better care of my body, mind, & spirit, especially by cutting back on carbs & sweet & by joining the gym down the street. I'm also committed to my mental health - in particular, to not letting wedding planing overwhelm me or get me down.

I will commit to my friendships.

So many of my friends live so far away, so while I can't always visit them, but I can call them more often than I text. I've been so phone-averse that I haven't caught up with some of my favorite people in ages! In 2017, I want to be better at keeping in touch in as many ways as possible, to telling people when I'm thinking of them & to find out what's going on in their lives.

I will commit to financial security.

I'm not doing badly on this front, but I could certainly be doing better. In 2017, I will rethink impulse purchases, continue to save using Digit, pay off my credit card bill, save more from my bimonthly paychecks, & plan a wedding that is within our budget & doesn't set us back financially. I'mmaking progress on all these fronts & would like to keep it up this year.

I will commit to love.

In November, I will legally commit myself to Mike & in doing so, I will formalize my commitment to a lifetime of love, no matter how much work it takes. I am under no illusions that marriage will always be easy, but I am committed to working together to create a happy, loving, & lasting life together. I never thought I'd be the sort of person to feel this way, but I truly can't wait to say "I do" this fall.

Did you pick a word or a phrase for 2017? Did you make any resolutions? How's it going? Is this year better than 2016 yet? Happy new year, friends!

What I'm Focusing On in the Second Half of 2016

Friday, June 3, 2016

Yo, it's June. June. I'm rarely one of those people to be like, "Can you believe how quickly time passes?" but this is one of those times when I do feel like, "No, really, can you believe how quickly time passes?" Life is good, & all is well - 2016 has been good to me - but there is, of course, always room for improvement. Inspired by Amber's recent post "3 Areas of Intention I'm Focusing On," I put together a little list of my own to drive my efforts for the second half of the year.

1. Being a better friend.

I suck at keeping in touch. One of the blessings & curses of being active on social media & this blog is that people feel like they're up to date on my life, & usually they're right; I'm an open book. The problem? I have no idea what they're up to! I'm terrified of talking on the phone, & I usually choose books over Skype dates, but I miss my damn friends, & I want to keep in touch with them much, much better.

Maybe this means writing more emails or snail mail letters, just to check in. Maybe it means sending birthday gifts or "thinking of you" texts. Maybe it's calls & Skype dates. Maybe it's a happy hour with in-town friends or a weekend visit to see out-of-town friends. Whatever it is, I'm going to try to do it better.

2. Making an effort to network.

I've been in Cleveland for nearly a year now (!), & I've made approximately three professional contacts. It's way too easy to say, "Well, I like my job & am not looking for anything new, so why network?" but even if that's true, networking can only bring positives into my life - & you don't have to be down & out in the middle of a job hunt to benefit from it. Networking connects you to a larger, well, network of people - people with ideas & connections & resources.

My anxiety is so bad that I'd much rather opt out of talking to people I don't know in any sort of "official" capacity, meaning I'll chat up a storm with the barista but clam up at a networking event. As a bona fide adult, though it's high time that I work on conquering this fear. In the next six months, I want to send a few emails, make a few connections, & expand my Cleveland horizons. Who knows what it'll bring my way!

3. Writing more.

Don't get me wrong, I've been writing a lot. This year, more than any year before, I'm killing it in the writing department, by my personal standards. I've  been published in Seventeen, Cosmpolitan, Redbook, Women's Day, Good Housekeeping, Esquire, Elle... & yet, it doesn't feel like enough. I want to do more writing. I want to do better writing. I want to write until there is nothing else left to say (which will never, ever happen). I want to be able to call myself a writer & not feel like a fraud when I say it.

This year, very quietly & with my boyfriend's encouragement, I started writing a book. I don't know if it will go anywhere or be anything, but I want to finish it. Maybe that's too much to ask of myself in the next six months, but it's certainly not too much to ask that I try.

***

So there you have it. I can think of half a dozen other areas I'd like to improve upon (um, financial literacy, anyone?), but for now, these three top the list. Tell me: What are your goals for the rest of this year? Got any tips for working on mine?
