Getting Serious About Suburban Living

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

As promised, I got a car. Helloooooo, beautiful 2008 Honda Civic that is not at (as great of a) risk of breaking down mid-highway!

Also, I got a cat. Meet Stringer Bell, originally named George (we can't decide), age 10, adopted from our local SPCA. He likes cuddling, sleeping in bed with me & sneezing in my face; he does not like catnip, responding to our calls or, it seems, eating his food.

Following announcement of my two new acquisitions, my boss sent me a concerned email: "First a car and now a cat? This suburban thing is getting out of hand."

Ain't that the truth! He made me promise I wouldn't "lose [my] edge." I promised, of course, but this cat in my lap seems to have other plans for me.

I also promise not to become one of those simpering, obnoxious pet owners who constantly talks about & posts photos of my cat. Then again, I once promised not to be a douchey, Apple-worshiping iPhone owner who Googles things mid-conversation, either - and just look at me now.

  1. Hey. I am one of those simpering, obnoxious pet owners who constantly talks about & posts photos of my cat— And you still love me, right?

Also, have you taken the kitty to the vet yet? if he's sneezing a lot he may have a cold.

  2. Stick with the name George! Like it much better. What a cutie.

  3. Yay for a new car and pet. Just curious, why did you get a 10 year old and not a younger cat?

  4. We went with an older cat because, honestly, cats live for a long time -
sometimes two decades! - and who knows where we'll be in next year, much
less the next 20? Older cats end up in shelters longer because people don't
want them - but we thought he'd be a good choice because he's already
housebroken, already "trained" (as much as cats are trained anyway), already
a friendly, lovable guy without being too hyperactive, as kittens sometimes
are. He's got a lot of good years left in him, but not nearly as many as a
younger cat, so he seemed perfect for us!

  5. See, I knew you had a well thought out reason. Well, either that or it was love at first sight :)

  6. I LOVE that you adopted an older cat. There are so many people out there looking for kittens & sadly the older cats usually spend an extraordinarily long time looking for their forever homes.

  10. I'm all about adopting older pets. I don't have to be the one to potty train them. :P But then again, some of the bad habits that other people have ingrained into their pets - can't get out of those.

Look at you, first a car, now a cat. What next?!?! Keep us posted. :p

  12. Okay, so I admit when I (might) have been wrong -- George looks mighty happy & so do you, so I guess you were meant to have another cat.

  13. Yay for the new car!

Also, your cat is cute! One of my cats (Loki) is currently keeping my feet warm. We've had him since he was a kitten, and he's probably close to two years old now. (Our other cat, Eris, is about a year old now.) I'm pretty much a crazy cat lady. :)

  16. Oh man, I love it so much that you named your kitty after one of the gangsters from the Wire. I personally would have chosen "Avon Barksdale" (I hated Stringer's character in the series) but maybe that's a better name for a dog?

  26. Congratulations! You did yourself right buying a used CVCC. Great mileage, reliability and it'll run forever.

Can't say the same about the cat.

That is so awesome! Congrats on your new car and cat! :] I've never had a cat because my mom was always allergic and now I have a dog.....but maybe one day I'll get a cute little kitten.
And I think George is a cute name! :]

  38. My best friends and I have a plan for living together. Not exactly how or when we will accomplish this, but rather, our cats and what their names will be: Disel, Fenway and Dipset. We're obviously really cool.

  39. Girl, you will definitely become one of those people who always post pet photos. It's inevitable if you have a cat, hahaha. I was NEVER a cat person, then I finally got one and I looooove him. Cats have personality.

    Congrats on the car!!!
