Something Fishy

Saturday, March 19, 2011

I do not like fish. I don't like fish in the water, possibly swimming next to my feet, & I don't like fish in my mouth, tasting all fishy & disgusting. In no circumstances are fish & I friends.

But then I found Sake. Let's be clear, Sake is not a miracle worker - it hasn't bridged the gap between fish & me. What is has done is welcome me into the Wonderful World of Sushi (capitalized as though it's a real place) without forcing me to reconcile my relationship with the little swimmers that skeeve me so.

In short, I have Americanized my sushi experience as much as humanly possible by capitalizing on Sake's many creatively fish-free menu items, including:

  • Idaho Maki: Fried sweet potato roll

  • Tempura California Maki: A California roll (crab stick, cucumber & avocado) deep-fried in tempura batter

  • Crispy Spicy Chicken Maki: Fried chicken, avocado, cucumber and spicy mayonnaise roll

  • Volcano Maki: Baked avocado & melted cheese roll topped with spicy mayonnaise crab

  • Pizza Maki: Baked avocado, crab stick & spicy mayonnaise roll covered with melted cheese

That's right, I'm eating sushi with melted cheese on top & potatoes inside, smothered in mayo. I'm pretty sure this is not what the venerable ancient Japanese had in mind long ago, when sushi first came to be. And I'm pretty sure I should be ashamed of turning the healthiest gourmet food experience into one that is likely making my arteries cry out in pain.

I'm pretty sure I cannot, with any credibility, say, "I now like sushi!" if I still refuse to eat anything that contains raw fish. But my taste buds are happy. And I'm trying new things! And, and... well, who said small towns don't know good food?

  2. you and i are exactly the same when it comes to sushi. the first time i went out for sushi we had no idea what we were doing and ordered shashimi and everything raw. it was one of the worst meals i've ever had.

  3. I'm glad you can still find rolls to eat even if you don't like fish. :) I loooooove fish and seafood and all of that, so my only problem is whether it's fresh or not.

  4. I HATE fish, mostly because I'm allergic. I still can't get into sushi, even the fish-free kind. I hate seaweed, I can't use chopsticks, and I find sushi doesn't fill me up. Lame, I know...

  5. I think you should count it as sushi if it's in a sushi bar... Nobody need really know you haven't actually tried the raw fish. I hate fish anyway, never mind raw, how is that appealing? How is raw anything appealing? If you ate raw chicken people would frown and shake their heads and you'd be ill.

  6. Sushi refers to the kind of rice and how the rice is prepared, not the raw fish aspect, so you're totally good saying you like sushi! I personally love sushi with raw fish, but not gonna lie, I often get a Philidelphia roll, which has cream cheese in it along with the raw fish, haha. Americanized sushi is awesome.

  8. Sweet potato maki is my favourite. There's another roll I love called the "prego roll" because pregnant ladies apparently love it - it's avocado, mushroom & cream cheese. Authentic sushi? Not so much...but it tastes awesome (pregnant or not!)

  10. I would anything that even remotely looks like sushi - as long as it tastes good and still has that sushi texture to it. :) Anything fried rolled up in rice? I'll take it. :)

  11. Pretty much any roll that has cream cheese in it is a win for me. So yep, I'm on the "fake" sushi train as well but that doesn't stop me from saying that I like it. :)

  12. Those actually sound good! One of my best friends is like you and just can't do fish (cooked or otherwise). I like the raw stuff but, it's an acquired taste. (actually, GOOD sushi should be fresh enough that it doesn't even really taste or smell like fish). I've been eating sushi since I was a kid & my baby sister's favorite food as a tween was raw tuna. In other words my family probably has really high mercury levels.

  13. I don't like fish either - well, except for the ones swimming around in aquariums. I'm not a big fan of seafood, period - and I grew up on the coast. Go figure.

  15. I'm addicted to sushi and I don't eat any seafood at all, ever. I just really like veggie rolls - especially avocado rolls and these veg rolls with mango in them that one of our local places dishes up. It's crazy delicious and amazing.

  16. Hey whatever works. Maybe you'll try different Sushi rolls at a later time... it's an acquired taste, for sure.
