Awkward Cupcakes

Hey, did I mention that Nathan came home from deployment? He did! And when he got here, I was ready & waiting with some homemade goodies, including a pretty sweet pennant banner, which is still hanging, & these strawberry lemonade cupcakes:

What you can't tell is that those cupcakes actually read "WELCOME HOMF," which sounds vaguely German, because there were not enough E's available on the sheet of candy letters. Still, it was better than my first attempt at a welcome message, which looked like this:

Yeah, I think that error was a little bit more noticeable.

And then I ate a bunch of the leftover candy letters. And regretted it.

In keeping with the awesome cupcake theme, I made Sprinkles red velvet cupcakes for a BBQ I hosted last weekend while in Ohio. I wish I'd thought to take a photo when there was more than one cupcake left in the pan, as it would've been slightly more giggle-worthy. Alas, these desserts were so delicious that they temporarily blurred my blogability senses. Anyway, these cupcakes look distinctly like a part of the female anatomy, which did not go unnoticed by my guests.

Not on purpose, I swear! Apparently Sprinkles is a big, famous NYC bakery. How come no one ever accuses the Sprinkles folks of making boob cupcakes?!

Katy Perry, at least, would be proud.

Tonight looked like this:

Which puffed up into these:

Which @missallisong & I made into these:

 Which culminated in this...

...in my stomach.

Unfortunately, none of my photos really indicate how beautiful the cupcakes' insides were. Or how delicious they were. But they looked a little bit like The Dainty Squid's, albeit with a less-vibrant purple. Our purple was a little muddy but, you know, still really delicious. I brought five home in a shoebox but gave one to my cab driver along the way. He, too, agreed on the deliciousness factor.

In baking these - OK, co-baking them, really - I checked something else off my 101 in 1,001 List. Did I mention that they were beautiful & delicious? These last D.C. days sure are full of win.

When it looks like this outside...

...it's particularly nice when it looks like this inside.

Many thanks to my boss for eight reasons to be happy on an extraordinarily stormy birthday: chocolate-chocolate, vanilla-chocolate, strawberry, carrot cake, red velvet, something unidentifiably fruity, & two very delicious instances of lemon-blueberry. They've made a Baked & Wired believer outta this newly 26-year-old.

The glory that is Google Analytics allows me to browse the Google keywords that cause people to stumble upon my little blog. Some of them are, frankly, incredible. I love it. Ready? Commentary included, of course!
  • "jdate" (Lonely, single Jews searching for their soulmates.)
  • "sara jay" (Fans of the porn star I met on my birthday hoping for nudie pics)
  • "1 br dupont circle" (Folks looking to move into one-room shacks like mine)
  • "bar-b-quin with my honey" (Someone looking for Rap Snacks!)
  • "bow tied men" (A lady interested in classy gents)
  • "bow to men" (Some subservient woman?)
  • "buckeyes for boobies shirt" (I HAVE NO IDEA. How is this relevant to me?)
  • "cinematic concepts in goodbye lenin!" (College film major)
  • "city wife" (How did you get to ME? My apologies.)
  • "class of spiders daddy longleg where dose it hange out" (Some poor arachnophobe)
  • "day time hooker" (Governor Elliott Spitzer)
  • "feel the power between my legs" (Armageddon fan... or huge perv)
  • "four and a half punctuation" (A grammarian led astray)

  • "my sweet babe" (Sweet-talker)
  • "navy wife" (Again with the wives flocking to me for reasons unknown...)
  • "ohio porn stars" (More Sara Jay seekers?)
  • "palin" (There's no way I'm even in the top 1,000 results for this, so someone was REALLY dedicated in terms of vetting their Google results on this one.)
  • "porn star jan b" (PERVS LOVE ME)
  • "sex" (See my comments for "Palin," incidentally)
  • "she makes the city seem like home" (Anberlin fan! Emo kid!)

"The Cult of the Cupcake"

I visited my cousin Emily in the Big Apple last weekend, & she insisted (as though I needed it) upon taking me to the legendary Magnolia Bakery in the West Village. I indulged in a lovely vanilla cupcake with green icing & a pink sugar flower while we sat in the little park across the street. A jubilant-looking 40-something with concave cleavage approached to inform us of an impending performance in said park: "Unison Fetish," featuring the Cupcake Cadet Corps, which celebrated "the Cult of the Cupcake," whatever that may be.

A few minutes later, five girls & one guy pranced down Bleeker in shiny, sequined pink dresses & black dance shoes, singing about the joy of Magnolia & other various sorts of cupcake worship while double-fisting two of the bakery's own dessert delights. The cadets danced for about three songs, at one point smashing their cupcakes in their faces -- one girl got icing stuck up her nose but was so committed to her, um, art that she didn't even break unison formation to wipe it away.
Now that's dedication.

Quite some time ago, I blogged about the impending thrill of seeing a cupcakerie open up in Dupont Circle. Well, said establishment, Hello Cupcake, opened up about two weeks ago, & I was one of the many to wait in an hour-long line to try the goods. I've now tried Rootbeer Float, Peanut Butter Blossom, 24 Carrot, Peppermint Penny & the Hello Cupcake Original. For the sake of my hips, I hope you'll bear in mind that the majority of these treats were shared with coworkers. And by "the majority," I actually mean "all." Seriously.

Yesterday, I'd admitted defeat. No matter how badly I wanted to adore Hello Cupcake, I simply didn't. I was deflated.

And then? Today, a coworker needed a travel buddy as she trekked to the south side of Dupont Circle for a little cupcake indulgence. And today, I discovered the love of my life -- VELVET ELVIS.
Spongy banana cake with luscious peanut butter frosting. I am, suffice it to say, smitten. This cupcake was.... who can guess what I'm going to say next?

You got it:
OUTTA THIS WORLD.

Dupont Circle is Sweet. No, Seriously.

Best part of my life right now: TANGYSWEET. It’s the new kid on the P Street block, not dissimilar to Pinkberry, New York City’s finest Coldstone-style frozen yogurt gig. My coworkers & I get a 10% discount, the owner told us, because we’re “neighbors” (i.e. we work a whopping ½-block away), so today I treated myself to some (fat free!) pomegranate froyo with kiwi for a mere $3.

My life gets better: Coming next month to Connecticut Ave. is Hello Cupcake!
, with a self-explanatory name. This opens just before your Suburban Sweetheart celebrates her 24th birthday on August 5th, so please take note: I predict that my favorite flavors will be Velvet Elvis & Peanut Butter Blossom.

Ohio never tasted this good.
