Woman: "No, no, cuh-PRAY-zay."Please note that, in this case, "gnocchi" was pronounced "guh-NOCK-ee." And no, I don't think he was being ironic, although I'll give him the manga joke. Because I'm gracious.
Man: "OK, OK. Cuh-PRAY-zay. Got it.
Woman: "And gnocchi."
Man: "Gnocchi. Isn't that some character in Japanese manga?"
As hellish as their presence usually is, tourists can also be such gems, as demonstrated. How much do you want to bet that these ones were Midwesterners?
LOL my favorite pronounciation of "gnocchi" is "guh-noch-ee"
ReplyDeletei didn't realize gnocchi was such a difficult / nonstandard word until i was out of school and surrounded by grownups, and learned that 80% of americans apparently do not know how to pronounce the word.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of the Italian language without thinking of this.
ReplyDeleteGood manga jokes are hard to find. Best part of this one is that it was made by someone who pronounced "gnocchi" as "guh-nock-ee."
