Return to Sender

Just under a year ago , I lost my wallet – and the driver’s license, credit cards, & $80 in cash inside it – when I left it on the seat of a city bus. After so much crying & wigging that I had to take a personal day off work to recover (and to try to get my finances in order) I was shocked to receive a call from a Days Inn employee who said he had my wallet – & who gave it back to me with all its contents still intact. Good Samaritans, it turns out, do exist.

Since then, thankful for the good fortune the universe bestowed upon me, I’ve returned two renegade driver’s licenses and one dropped credit card through the power of WhitePages.com and Facebook.

And apparently I’ve got the best karma – or luck – in the world. On my flight home out of Boston last Monday, I managed to misplace my license somewhere between security & boarding. How? Beats me. Where? If I knew, it wouldn’t be lost. I returned home chagrined & annoyed & quite afraid I’d also somehow misplace my passport (which, I should note, contains zero stamps, despite one very cosmopolitan business trip to Toronto).

Yesterday, I got a karmic favor. The text from my mom read, "Envelope came in the mail, I think it's your license." And indeed it was.

I guess I don't know why I'm so shocked that someone would do it - would see my license lying on the ground at Logan International Airport & think it was worth 44 cents & the cost of an envelope to get it back to me. I'd do that; I've done that, & more. But somehow, when the universe pulls through for me like this, I'm always astounded all over again that good people exist. Despite news reports that constantly depict heinous acts of abuse & terror & neglect & violence, there are tons & tons of people out there who are kind enough to put my driver's license back in the mail for me. It's a little thing. But you know what they say about the little things.

  1. Interesting tip I've read for lost wallets- include a photo of a child, studies have shown it increases return rates.

  3. I definitely believe in good karma and you're so lucky & kind to return the favor to others. I haven't had the best of luck with returning things that I lost and I hope I will next time.

  4. I'm not a big player in people-trusting, so I'm always pleasantly surprised when someone does anything nice for me, even if it's just holding an open door. I try to do nice things for others and I believe karma comes back in many, many forms.

  5. Awesome. Good samaritans make the world go round, and you have some SERIOUS luck with good fortune, indeed! I really like that sign, too. It's so very true.

Wow! I've got many incredibly crazy stories of having just about the same amount of amazing luck that you have! I've lost my purse in Europe before (might write a post about that one because it is an interesting tale). It is so wonderful to have nice people return things though. I love knowing that the world is filled with kind-hearted and well-intentioned people!

  10. Despite being a frequent reader, this is my first comment. I do love posts about karma, but I'm actually writing about the photo. I'm not sure where you got it, but it was taken at the Spenard Builders Supply in my hometown of Soldotna, Alaska. I was actually just in this store today. They post a new inspirational quote each week, and I'm glad their thoughts made it all the way to D.C.

  12. Wow. That photo just socked me in the gut. I'm probably going to be stealing it for a Joey's Auction wrap-up. Did you take it or is it a random i'net pic?

  13. That's wonderful, and really makes me want to do more to be a Good Samaritan for someone else.

  14. This post made me happy...I mean, I think it really says something about the world we live in if something like someone returning something the way they found it shocks us or makes us grin but DUDE! That's for real! I'm stoked for you!
This makes me want to do an anonymous good deed and make someone else smile :)

  15. I wish I had this luck. I went to collect my personal items from the car that I thought was stolen, but was just moved over 2 miles from my house. EVERYTHING was in it, except my iPod. My GPS was even still there. But some one who worked at the place where my car is being held before it's sadly actioned off stole my iPod. This post did help me remember why I love humanity and that my good karma will come back for me, eventually.

  17. LOVE that quote. I'm a firm believer that what goes around, comes around and I think, with all the good karma you've put out into the universe, it's no wonder your ID made it back to you again.
